Austin Green Real EstateThat Austin is a, or maybe even the national leader when it comes to go-green initiatives shouldn’t come as a surprise. The city may brand itself as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” but it’s also equally famous for its strong social conscience, can-do attitude and spirit of entrepreneurship – all of which have launched a green movement that continues to build on itself. No matter where you are in the city these days, you’ll see that Austin green real estate is fast becoming the property of choice of an increasing number of homebuyers.
The widespread support and promotion of Austin green real estate is only one part of the multipronged approach that the city has taken in its long-term plan to build a sustainable future. The goals that the city is currently working to reach, as detailed in the Austin Climate Protection Plan, include making all municipal facilities, fleets and operations completely carbon-neutral by 2020; and raising the bar even higher for efficiency and greenhouse-gas reductions in the city’s already high-performing utilities.
The municipal-owned electrical utility, Austin Energy, currently runs a Residential Green Building Program, which gives one to five-star ratings to new and recently remodeled homes. It also has a Power Saver Program, whose features include low-interest loans for consumers wanting to increase their home’s energy efficiency or for those who want to install a solar power system.
In Austin, going green is so easy – not to mention cost-effective, healthy and altogether good for everyone – that it simply doesn’t make sense not to. What’s more, if you’re a home-buyer, the process of looking for a green home in Austin just got smoother. Starting June of this year, the city will require home sellers to provide potential buyers with their home’s Energy Audit results.
